Important Notes:
- NOTE: Our in-person classes are designed for students with intermediate to advanced levels of English proficiency.
- Spring and fall semesters run 15-16 weeks. The summer session consists of 10 weeks of instruction.
- Usually, all levels of instruction (intermediate, high-intermediate, and low-advanced) are offered each semester.
- Part-time students are placed in regular IEP courses with our full-time English language students.
- Refunds are issued following the university posted policy. An administrative fee will be applied for every class withdrawal processed.
- IEP part-time students do not pay university fees, so they are not eligible to use university resources such as the recreational center/gym or student health services. They may study in NC State libraries, but cannot check out or borrow materials from the library.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what level I am?
Upon registration, part-time students will be sent instructions on how to take our online proficiency test. The IEP staff will review the results of the test with the students and recommend courses that fit the students’ interests, abilities, and schedule.
Part-time students MAY take classes at different skill levels to account for their strengths in different skill areas and the result of their placement test. For example, a student with stronger speaking skills may take Conversation/Pronunciation/Listening Skills Level 5 at the same time as Reading/Vocabulary Level 4.
When will I know my schedule?
Tentative course schedules will be made available approximately 1-2 weeks prior to the start date of the upcoming semester. Final course schedules will be available approximately three days before the first day of class.
Important Notes:
- Part-time students are placed in classes with full-time students as long as there are sufficient seats available. Therefore, it is important to register early to secure your seat in a class.
How can I advance to the next level?
Part-time IEP students are responsible for all of the work assigned by their instructors. At the end of each semester, they receive a grade that represents their level of achievement.
In order to advance to the next level for a specific skill, part-time students must achieve a grade of at least 83. This is to ensure that these students have met the student learning outcomes for their course and are ready for more challenging material at the next level of instruction.
