Visiting Scholar Courses

Visiting Scholar Courses – Spring 2024 Registration begins 1/19/24

Each semester, the IEP offers visiting scholars at NC State a 10-week conversation skills class and a 10-week writing skills class for a small fee. These classes are in person and give visiting scholars a chance to meet other members of this unique university community. Visiting scholars can also enroll in an Intensive English Language course as part-time students with the approval of their department. Details on both options can be found below.

I. Conversation Skills

  • Course Overview: In this 10-week course, students will have an opportunity to sharpen their English conversation skills and explore topics relating to American culture. This is a very popular class that fills up quickly.
  • Course Details:(Spring, Summer, and Fall):
    • 1.5 hours/week for 10 weeks
      • Spring: Late January – mid-April (no class during Spring Break)
        • SP24 – Wednesdays, 3:00-4:30pm – First day of class – January 31, 2024
      • Summer: mid-May – mid/late July
      • Fall: early September – mid-November
    • All proficiency levels welcome
    • Course Fee: $50

II. Academic Writing Skills

  • Course Overview: In this 10-week class, students will learn how to improve their English language writing. The instructor will focus on various types of academic writing and advanced grammatical structures. Please note there are assignments outside of class.
    • Students will:
      • focus on various types of academic writing including, but not limited to email, reports, summaries, and problem-solution texts.
      • review and practice advanced grammatical structures and tones common to each type of writing.
      • learn to recognize appropriate styles for specific audiences
      • learn to interpret, assess, and respond to information in professional and academic publications
      • acquire the ability to properly utilize and cite document sources.
  • Course Details (Spring and Fall):
    • recommended for intermediate-advanced English writing proficiency levels
    • 2 hours/week for 10 weeks
      • Spring: Late January – mid-April (No class during Spring Break)
        • SP24 – Wednesdays, 1-3pm – First Day of Class – January 31, 2024
      • Fall: mid-September – mid-November
    • Course fee: $85
  • Course Details (Summer):
    • 1.5 hours/week for 10 weeks
      • Summer: mid-May – late July
    • Course fee: $65

Part-Time Enrollment

Visiting scholars are eligible to enroll in one of our regular IEP courses as a part-time student. Part-time students can enroll in up to 23 hours per week. Because of the intensive nature of our classes, however, we suggest that our visiting scholars get approval from their designated department before enrolling in any IEP courses as part-time students. NOTE: Part-time students must demonstrate at least an intermediate level of English proficiency to participate in this program. Click below to learn more about our part-time enrollment program.
