Undergraduate Conditional Admission

Conditional admission is designed for academically competitive international students who REALLY WANT to attend NC State, but who do not meet the English proficiency requirements for full undergraduate admission. Students who are conditionally admitted to NC State study in the IEP before entering their academic programs. After completing the IEP, conditionally admitted students proceed directly to their major without having to take an additional English proficiency tests.

Advantages of Conditional Admission

  • Strengthen your English language skills without affecting your undergraduate GPA
  • Prepare for success on campus by learning about American university culture and academic expectations
  • Work with experienced instructors who understand the needs of international students
  • And REMEMBER – No additional TOEFL/IETS/Duolingo scores are required once you complete the IEP.

Eligibility for Conditional Admission

  • Apply directly to NC State as an undergraduate student
    • you do not APPLY for conditional admission itself
  • Have at least a TOEFL iBT 42, IELTS 5.0, or a Duolingo 80
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you enroll in the IEP directly as an English Language Study student and later decide to apply to NC State while you in the program, you are not eligible for conditional admission to the university.

Fulfill Terms of Conditional Admission

Students who are offered conditional admission from the NC State Office of Undergraduate Admissions will be enrolled in a degree program after they have successfully completed the Intensive English Program’s Level 6 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and met attendance requirements.

Conditionally admitted students must follow all IEP rules and academic requirements. Only when students successfully exit Level 6 can they begin their undergraduate classes at NC State. Failure to meet IEP requirements results in the loss of NC State’s offer of admission.

NC State’s Pathway Program

Conditionally admitted undergraduate students may be eligible to apply for the NC State Pathway Program. In the Pathway Program, students take a combination of IEP courses and undergraduate credit courses at the same time allowing them to earn credits towards their graduation requirements.
