Visiting Scholar Courses

Each semester, the IEP offers visiting scholars at NC State a 10-week conversation skills class and a 10-week writing skills class for a small fee.

Due to the continued global pandemic, the IEP was not able to offer our evening/weekend classes for the Fall 2021 semester. We are continuing to monitor the situation closely in the hope that we will be able to resume face-to-face classes for the Spring 2022 semester.

Conversation Skills

  • Course Overview: In this 10-week course, students will have an opportunity to sharpen their English conversation skills and explore topics relating to American culture.
  • Course Details:
    • 1 hour/week for 10 weeks
      • Spring: end of January – middle of April
      • Summer: middle of May – end of July
      • Fall: middle of September – middle of November
    • Two sections – lunchtime
    • All proficiency levels welcomed
    • Course Fee: $40

Academic Writing Skills

  • Course Overview: In this 10-week class, students will learn how to improve their English language writing. The instructor will focus on various types of academic writing and advanced grammatical structures. Please note there are assignments outside of class.
    • Students will:
      • focus on various types of academic writing including, but not limited to email, reports, summaries and problem-solution texts.
      • review and practice advanced grammatical structures and tone common to each type of writing.
      • learn to recognize appropriate style for specific audience
      • learn to interpret, assess, and respond to information in professional and academic publications
      • acquire the ability to properly utilize and cite document sources.
  • Course Details (Spring and Fall):
    • 2 hours/week for 10 weeks in the evening
    • Spring: end of January – middle of April
    • Fall: middle of September – middle of November
    • Course fee: $150
  • Course Details (Summer):
    • 1 hour/week for 10 weeks at lunchtime
    • Summer: middle of May – end of July
    • Course fee: $75

Note: A minimum level of intermediate English proficiency is required to get full benefit from these classes.

Part-Time Enrollment

The IEP offers part-time enrollment in its regular courses. Part-time students can enroll in 1-3 courses, up to 16 hours per week. Please note that part-time students must demonstrate at least an intermediate level of English proficiency in order to participate in this program.
