Transportation

There are many ways to get to and from the IEP building and home.

Parking Off-Campus

Parking on Hillsborough Street, right in front of the IEP building, is limited. Parking meters are $1.50 per hour with a 2-hour limit. Be careful: if you go over 2 hours without paying for more time, there is a very good chance that you will be ticketed and have to pay a fine.

Parking On-Campus

Parking on campus is very limited and expensive. Only students with parking permits can park in specially designated areas on or near campus. Parking permits must be purchased and a parking sticker must be displayed on the passenger side of the front windshield. Not every student who wants a parking permit will receive one due to the limited number of spaces on campus and the high demand to park at NC State.

Parking is enforced from 7am-5pm daily. If you park without a permit or if you park in the incorrect parking section, you will have to pay a fine that varies depending on where you parked. Parking permits must be purchased at the Transportation Office.

The NC State Transportation office is located in the Administrative Services I, 2721 Sullivan Drive (across the street from Doak Baseball Field and the NC State tennis courts).

Driving in North Carolina – NC Driver’s License

If you are interested in getting a North Carolina driver’s license, here are steps that you will need to follow.

Note: you cannot apply for a driver’s license until 10 days after your check-in with the Office of International Services during orientation.

Cars navigate around the traffic circle, past Brooks Hall, on Pullen Road.

NC State Buses

Wolfline bus

Wolfline

NC State offers a free system of bus transportation for all students called the WolfLine. Buses are red, white, and black with the Wolfline logo lettering. You do not need to show your ID card to ride the bus. Wolfline buses follow 11 specific routes and make regular stops at places designated at Wolfline stops. These buses run all days and evenings that classes are in session.

In the IEP student lounge and around campus, you will find real-time information on the NC State bus routes. You can also find your bus online in real time or download the app to your phone.

If you ever leave something behind on a Wolfline bus, please call 919-861-6960 for assistance.

Red Terror

NC State football and basketball games are played near campus at the PNC Arena. The Red Terror bus is a great transportation option to get to and from these games. You will find that football and basketball games are extremely popular with NC State students and parking near the stadium is limited.

Regional Bus Services

The Triangle area (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) has many interesting and fun places to explore Public transportation in the area is convenient and inexpensive. NC students can obtain a $5 pass (GoPass) each semester for the public transportation system.

Triangle Transit Route 100 offers direct service between downtown Raleigh, the NC State campus and RDU Airport. Please note that this bus does not run on Sundays.

Taxis

Taxis are a convenient and relatively inexpensive way of getting around. The company, Taxi Taxi, is very popular in the Raleigh area. You can book a taxi online through their website or through their app. The phone number is also very easy to remember: 919-333-3333. The estimated cost from the airport to NC State is approximately $50. Remember, it is customary to give the driver a small tip of approximately 15% of the cost of the ride.

Alternative Modes of Transportation

Lyft & Uber

Lyft and Uber are both app-based transportation services. Using the app you say where you want to go and they send a driver to come get you and estimate how much the ride will cost. These apps are very popular because they are typically cheaper than getting a taxi. Drivers are reviewed and have to meet certain criteria in order to be a driver for each company.

Bicycles and Scooters

Bicycling is becoming more popular for students who live close to campus. There are lots of resources for students who want to bike on and around campus on the Transportation website.
