Visiting Scholar Courses – Fall 2025 Registration begins 8/1/25

Each semester, the IEP offers visiting scholars at NC State a 10-week conversation class and a 10-week writing class – each for a small fee. These in-person classes give visiting scholars a chance to meet other members of this unique university community while working on their English communication skills.

With approval from their research department, visiting scholars can also enroll in one or more Intensive English Language courses as part-time students. Details on both options can be found below.

I. Conversation Skills

  • Course Overview: In this 10-week course, students will have an opportunity to sharpen their English conversation skills and explore topics relating to American culture and how to share personal and professional information. This is a very popular class that fills up quickly.
  • Course Details:
    • 1.5 hours/week for 10 weeks
      • Fall 2025: early September – late November
      • Registration begins – 8/1/25
      • Tuesdays – 3:30-5:00pm
        • First Class – September 2, 2025
      • Course Fee: $50
      • Spring: Mid-Jan. – March
      • All proficiency levels welcome

II. Academic Writing Skills

  • Course Overview: In this interactive 10-week class, students will examine writing for a variety of academic contexts including, but not limited to email, lab reports, academic summaries, and problem-solution texts. Please note there will be assignments outside of class.
    • Students will:
      • review and practice advanced grammatical structures and tones common to each type of writing.
      • learn to recognize and use appropriate styles for specific audiences
      • learn to interpret, assess, and respond to information in professional and academic publications
      • acquire the ability to properly utilize and cite document sources.
  • Course Details (Spring and Fall):
    • recommended for intermediate-advanced English writing proficiency levels
    • 2 hours/week for 10 weeks
      • Fall 2025: early-September – late November
      • Registration begins – 8/1/25
      • Thursdays- 3:30-5:30pm
        • First Class – September 4, 2025
        • Course fee: $85
        • Fall: Mid-Aug. – November
        • Spring: Mid-Jan. – March

Part-Time Enrollment

Visiting scholars are eligible to enroll in one or more of our IEP-Academic courses as a part-time student. Part-time students can enroll in up to 23 hours per week. Because of the intensive nature of our classes, however, we suggest that our visiting scholars get approval from their designated department before enrolling in any of our academic English courses.

NOTE: Part-time students must demonstrate at least an intermediate level of English proficiency to participate in our IEP-Academic classes. Click below to learn more about our part-time enrollment program.

English Language Coaching Sessions

Interested members of the NC State and local communities, can purchase one-on-one English language coaching sessions with the IEP instructional team. Past participants have used these sessions for conversational practice, pronunciation issues, as well as feedback and instruction related to written work (reports, applications, emails, etc.).
