Student Employment Opportunities

The Intensive English Program (IEP) hires undergraduate students each semester in volunteer positions.

Orientation Leader Volunteers

The IEP Orientation Leader Volunteers are a team of dedicated undergraduate students who play a vital role in assisting the new international undergraduate/graduate students with their transition into the Intensive English Program and NC State University! The orientation leaders serve as resources, facilitators, and official representatives of the University and the IEP during orientation.

  • Introduce new students to campus life, make them aware of available resources and help them adjust to U.S. culture and the university environment
  • Assist with leading orientation sessions and activities
  • Lead a “Help” Session to answer students’ questions about items on their checklist such as: creating their NC State Google account, navigating MyPack Portal, understanding student health services requirements, waiving/enrolling in StudentBlue health insurance, obtaining student ID cards, choosing a meal plan, etc.
  • Answer basic questions about the Intensive English Program, NC State, and Raleigh
  • Lead ice-breakers and discussions with your orientation group between sessions
  • Escort students to orientation sessions and events

  • Develop your intercultural leadership and communication skills
  • Share your knowledge and experience with new international students
  • Develop your time management skills
  • Create connections with students from all over the world
  • Enhance your resume with international experience without leaving campus
  • Receive information about other employment and cross-cultural training opportunities within Global Engagement
  • Completed a minimum of one year as an NC State undergraduate student
  • Strong English communication skills especially with international populations
  • Outgoing and hospitable personality
  • Knowledge of NC State and surrounding areas

Preferred:

  • Experience leading groups and ice-breakers
  • Fluency in a second language
  • International experience such as study abroad or living in a foreign country as an international student or working overseas

Fall 2020

  • Orientation Leader Training: July TBD (half day)
  • New Student Orientation: August 10 – 14
    • Typical day is 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

We are currently accepting applications for the Fall 2020 New Student Orientation.

ALUC Volunteer Leader

New IEP students participate in a one hour per week “American Life and University Culture” course. A current NC State undergraduate student participates in the course as well in order to provide a current student’s knowledge and experience.

  • Assist with planning and leading assigned weekly one-hour ALUC class
  • Actively engage with students during class
  • Announce upcoming activities and encourage students to go
  • Maintain communication with the ALUC Instructor
  • Introduce new students to campus life, make them aware of available resources and help them adjust to U.S. culture and the university environment
  • ALUC class topics include:
    • Academically-focused aspects of student life such as:
      • Communication strategies
      • Time management and goal setting
      • Academic policies and resources available on campus
      • Working effectively in groups
    • Cultural information (university sports, pop culture, etc.)
    • Practical advice pertinent to students’ success
  • Develop your intercultural leadership and communication skills
  • Share your knowledge and experience with new international students
  • Improve your presentation and public speaking skills
  • Develop your time management skills
  • Create connections with students from all over the world
  • Enhance your resume with international experience without leaving campus
  • Receive information about other employment and cross-cultural training opportunities within Global Engagement
  • Completed a minimum of one year as an NC State undergraduate student
  • Strong English communication skills especially with international populations
  • Outgoing and hospitable personality
  • Knowledge of NC State and surrounding areas

  • Experience speaking in a classroom setting or leading groups and ice-breakers
  • Fluency in a second language
  • International experience such as study abroad or living in a foreign country as an international student or working overseas
  • 1 hour/week for the 15 week semester
  • Note: IEP semester dates differ slightly from the rest of campus
